Which games accept fancy text in names?

Rules with a source link come from the game's own documentation. The others are what players commonly report, because the publisher doesn't publish them, so treat them as a guide.

How to choose a gaming font

Start with where the text will live. A logo or title can be as loud as you like, so decorative gaming fonts like Monoton, Rubik Glitch or Black Ops One work there. Menus, HUDs and subtitles need a gaming font that stays readable at small sizes and quick glances, so game interfaces lean on clean, squared sans fonts. Cyberpunk 2077's interface, for example, is set in Rajdhani. Then match the mood: pixel fonts for retro and indie games, wide geometric fonts for sci-fi, heavy condensed fonts for shooters and sports, and glitchy or terminal fonts for cyberpunk.

Video game fonts that real games use

Some of these video game fonts have a direct line to actual games. Press Start 2P is based on the screen font of 1980s Namco arcade games. VT323 recreates the DEC VT320 computer terminal, and Sixtyfour and Workbench rework the Commodore 64 and Amiga system fonts. Cyberpunk 2077 sets most of its interface in Rajdhani, with Orbitron for small decorative text, according to Fonts In Use. All of them are free to download above.

Best gaming fonts for logos, thumbnails and stream overlays

For an esports font or team logo, bold fonts like Black Ops One, Russo One, Goldman and Saira Stencil One hold their shape on jerseys and small avatars. For YouTube thumbnails, condensed fonts like Bebas Neue, Anton and Teko let you fit big words in a small frame. For Twitch overlays and alerts, pick something readable at a glance, like Rajdhani or Chakra Petch, and save the decorative cool gaming fonts for the title card. The best gamer font for a profile picture is a simple one: at avatar size, Press Start 2P or Russo One will still read where thin, detailed fonts turn to mush.

Retro game fonts and computer game fonts

A retro game font copies the pixel grid of old hardware. Press Start 2P, Silkscreen, Pixelify Sans and Jersey 10 are the cleanest, while Tiny5 and Micro 5 work at very small sizes. For a computer game font with a terminal feel, use VT323, Share Tech Mono or Sixtyfour. Keep pixel fonts at sizes that are multiples of their grid, such as 16 or 32 pixels, so the edges stay sharp.

Use this page as a video game font generator

You don't need to install a font to get gaming text. Type your gamer tag or title, choose a color, and press Save as PNG under any font for a transparent image you can drop into a thumbnail, banner or overlay. Press Download when you need the font file itself for Photoshop, Canva, OBS or a game engine.

Copy-and-paste gaming text for in-game names

Font files can't change how your name looks inside a game, a Discord server or a social app, because those apps only show their own font. For that, use the copy-and-paste gaming text section on this page. It turns your text into Unicode characters, such as manga-style kanji letters or currency symbols, and can wrap them in decorations like ꧁ ꧂ or ★彡. Check the table next to it first: some games, like Valorant and Minecraft, only accept plain letters and numbers in names.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these gaming fonts free for commercial use?

+

Yes. All 47 are released under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use in games, videos, logos and products. The only rule is that you can't sell the font files on their own.

How do I install a gaming font?

+

Download the zip, unzip it and open the .ttf file. On Windows click Install, and on a Mac click Install Font. For OBS or a game engine like Unity or Godot, import the .ttf file directly. Uploading fonts to Canva needs Canva Pro.

What font do most video games use?

+

There's no single one. Many games use a clean sans font for menus, like Rajdhani in Cyberpunk 2077, and a custom or decorative font for the logo. Retro and indie games often use pixel fonts like Press Start 2P.

Can I make gaming text without downloading a font?

+

Yes. Type your text at the top of the page and press Save as PNG under the font you like. You'll get a transparent PNG image.

Can I use these fonts for my in-game name?

+

No. Games and apps display names in their own font, so an installed font won't show up there. Use the copy-and-paste gaming text section, or the Free Fire and PUBG name generators, for names.

Where do these fonts come from?

+

They're open-source fonts published on Google Fonts. Each card credits the designer and links to the font's Google Fonts page, and every download includes the license file.
